H.S.H. Prince Albert II
follows in the footsteps of
His Great-Great-Grandfather
Prince Albert I of Monaco
on a voyage to the North Pole

1906 – 2006
North Pole Expedition

H.S.H. Prince Albert II travels go to the North Pole from April 10th to 19th, 2006, with Alaskan Husky sledge dogs. The voyage will begin from the Russian Base of Barneo, 120 kilometer away from the Pole.

This crossing will unite H.S.H. Prince Albert II the opportunity to pay tribute to His Great-Great-Grandfather, Prince Albert 1st of Monaco, who was a pioneer of modern oceanography, who, in 1906, undertook on the Svalbard Archipelago, the most successful of His four Arctic exploration campaigns.

Prince Albert's North Pole Expedition supports a campaign aimed at raising awareness of world public opinion to the global issues that represent, in the short term, risks pertinent to climatic warming and dangers of industrial pollution, which impact is serious in the Arctic.

Although far away from industrialized areas, Arctic wildlife concentrates inordinate rates of toxic substances brought in by winds and ocean currents. Local populations are hence directly affected via the food chain.

Climatic warming is a very serious problem that must be studied more thoroughly to be better understood. Before the end of the 21st century, it could result in dramatic global consequences liable to disrupt the environment and the world economy: sea level rise, frequency and intensity raise of some natural disasters, emergence of new diseases, and disappearance of animal species.

The preparation of the expedition of H.S.H. Prince Albert started in January 2005 in Sweden. The Prince and the team accompanying Him underwent specific training, mainly turned towards long-distance Alaskan sledge dog journeys. A final training is planned qt the end of January 2006 in Scandinavia; Team Members shall have the opportunity to make a simulation close to real-life conditions.

To achieve this expedition, a scientific collaboration was set up with WWF - the First Global Conservation Organization, which skills are recognized throughout the world— and the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, erected by Prince Albert 1st.

Business partners of this operation are Boeing, Intel, Nike, Sony, Oracle, HSBC, Breitling.

A press conference shall take place in the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco on Monday November 28th 2005, at noon, in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II as well as the members of the North Pole Expedition.
