He accepted the distinction at a dinner organised at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego which hosted three hundred prominent figures from the scientific, university and business worlds.

The Sovereign Prince is the second prominent person to receive this distinction, awarded to Al Gore for the first time in 2008. It honours prominent people from politics and the private sector who have made an eminent contribution to the advancement and promotion of action in the area of oceans, climate and earth sciences.

In his acceptance speech the Sovereign Prince paid homage to Roger Revelle, the eminent scientist, one of the founders of the University of California, San Diego, now one of the most renowned in the United States. As director of the « Scripps Institution of Oceanography » he was closely involved in research including the interaction between CO2 emissions and the greenhouse effect, which, half a century ago, was a key factor in raising awareness on climate change and its consequences.

Before the event HSH the Prince had the opportunity to speak at length with researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography whose research includes the worrying phenomenon of increasing acidification of the oceans related to the absorption of greenhouse gases. He then visited the institution's laboratories and aquarium.

At the end of the day the Sovereign Prince delivered a lecture on the theme « Biodiversity & climate, urgent & long term issues » at the University of San Diego. He emphasised the need for the international community to make strong commitments to reduce greenhouse gases at future major international meetings.

The conference was followed by a screening of the film about His Scientific mission to Antarctica at the beginning of 2009.
