HSH Prince Albert II wished to be present at Nelson Mandela's funeral in his native village because of the strong ties and profound respect binding His family with this truly exceptional figure.

Given the difficulty of access to the site by air and by road, HSH Prince Albert II benefited from the logistics set up in South Africa by the French authorities.

HSH Princess Charlene, who represented the Princely family at the ceremony organised last 10 December in Soweto, spoke on Friday by phone with Nelson Mandela's family and plans to visit Qunu in the very near future.

An oecumenical ceremony in tribute to the former South African President will take place in the Cathedral of Monaco at 5pm tomorrow, Tuesday 17 December, in the presence of THS the Prince and Princess.
