HSH Prince Albert II* is participating in the 36th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) in Brussels, on 21 and 22 May 2013.

On this occasion, the Sovereign will meet with Didier Reynders, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation for the Kingdom of Belgium, at 9.30am on 22 May.

The ATCM is the annual forum for discussion among representatives of the signatory parties to the 1959 Treaty of Washington.
Its purpose is to exchange information and formulate rules, decisions and resolutions to preserve Antarctica's unique status as a sanctuary granted by this Treaty.

* Immediately after his accession to the throne, Prince Albert II made environmental conservation, one of this century's crucial stakes, a major priority for his international action. In this context, he focused more specifically on the polar reaches, which are both particularly vulnerable and absolutely vital for our Planet.
In 2006, the Prince went to the Arctic, where he reached the North Pole on 16 April, after walking for four days on the fragile icecap. What he saw there convinced him to set up a Foundation dedicated to protection of the Environment.
