Monaco is delighted to host the start of the ‘Tour de France', one of the finest and most popular sporting events.

The 96th ‘Tour de France' will start from the Principality of Monaco on 4 July 2009 with a fifteen kilometre time trial along a highly technical course and finish on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, on 26 July, the day after braving the slopes of Mont Ventoux.

On this occasion, HSH the Sovereign Prince declared: “For Monaco, which was on the route of the ‘Tour' in 1964, this start for 2009 is an achievement and a promise.” He added: “This truly exceptional race is something we owe, of course, to its organizers who have modernized it over time, with outstanding talent and determination. But we owe it, most of all, to the cyclists, who keep up the suspense every year, making us quiver and allowing us to dream and I would like to pay them a special tribute.”

He concluded his speech with these words: “It is in this spirit of determination, responsibility and enthusiasm that Monaco will work to prepare this great celebration for next July 4th.”
