During this audience with the Sovereign Prince, Dr Sidibe received confirmation of the Principality of Monaco's concern with the problem of HIV/AIDS and its active policy both nationally and internationally. HSH the Prince recalled that health is one of the four areas of intervention of the Monegasque Government's International Development policy (in 2009, it will represent 56% of bilateral aid - between 2007 and 2009, a total budget of nearly €900,000 was engaged in the fight against HIV/AIDS).
HSH the Prince also emphasized that the framework agreement will be extended until 28 February 2011 and Monaco's contribution will increase by at least €100,000 minimum a year (the framework agreement for a minimum contribution of US$75,000 was signed previously in 2007 by Monaco for a two-year period).
UNAIDS groups UNAIDS Secretariat efforts and resources with those of ten organizations in the United Nations system to fight AIDS. The focal point of this struggle is universal access to HIV/AIDS treatment.
Dr Michel Sidibe, Executive Director of UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS), was appointed Under Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 January 2009, succeeding Dr Peter Piot.
