H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco’s trips to Brussels and Paris Friday 15th October 2010

On Friday 15th October, H.S.H. Prince Albert II took part in the “Arctic Futures" Symposium in Brussels organised by the European Parliament.

The Prince was welcomed by Mr Alain Hubert, Founder and Chairman of the International Polar Foundation and Mrs Isabelle Durant, Vice-President of the European Union for the Greens.
Mr Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, Mrs Maria Damanaki, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Mrs Isabelle Durant, Vice-President of the European Parliament also attended this event.

The Prince then visited the UNESCO headquarters for a working lunch with the Director General of UNESCO, Mrs Irina Bokova. They discussed UNESCO's Education and Sport programs, but also the challenges related to this institution's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission* (IOC).

At 3.30pm, H.S.H. the Prince toured the environment section at the Motor Show, where He visited the stand of electric vehicle manufacturer “Venturi” and also the eco-friendly car stand.
Since his accession, the Prince has asked His government to carry out an ambitious policy in terms of protecting the environment, particularly by introducing measures to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles in the Principality.

Finally, He awarded Mr Clément Duhaime, Administrator of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie the rank of officer of the Order of Saint Charles in the presence of Mr Abdou Diouf, Secretary General of the organisation, at the Monaco Embassy in Paris.

* For reference, H.S.H. Prince Albert II also recently took part in the conference “Arctic: Land of Dialogue” organised by the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow. At this conference, He met with H.E. Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation to discuss the Arctic.
He visited the Arctic in 2006 and has put a study of the Poles along with the movement for their protection at the centre of His Foundation's action.
