HSH Prince Albert II and HSH Princess Charlene will be received in audience by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican on Saturday 12 January 2013.
This visit reflects a long tradition of close trusting relations between the Principality of Monaco and the Holy See.
This Papal audience is of special importance for the Prince and Princess, since HSH Princess Charlene will be meeting the Sovereign Pontiff for the first time.
Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace were received at the Vatican by Pope Pius XII in 1957, by Pope John XXIII in 1959 and by Pope Paul VI in 1974. They also paid a visit to Pope John Paul I, then to Pope John Paul II.
In 1997, Prince Rainier III, Crown Prince Albert and Princess Caroline were granted a private audience by Pope John Paul II.
In 2005 and 2009, HSH Prince Albert II was received by HH Pope Benedict XVI.
