"I thank Mrs Angela Merkel for inviting me here this afternoon during My first official trip to Germany, a trip that has been planned for some time. The atmosphere of our meeting was extremely cordial. We discussed many topics, including the tax issues with Liechtenstein currently in the news. I reminded Mrs Angela Merkel that, for several years now, I have been taking determined action to make Monaco a healthy financial market that complies with international standards.
Mrs Angela Merkel expressed her wish to see fresh advances at European and international levels in the combat against laundering, fraud and corruption. She requested Monaco's cooperation on this front. I gave my approval for a strengthening of technical links between Monegasque departments (SICFIN) and German services (BKA). A mission of experts will meet soon to this end. Furthermore, once a general movement towards information exchange is implemented by all European States and the main financial markets, Monaco does not intend to remain on the sidelines. I congratulated Mrs Angela Merkel for the ambitious and effective actions undertaken during the German presidency of the European Union, notably in the fields of environmental protection and sustainable development. My commitment in this area is no secret. I want My country to cooperate closely with Germany, as we share the same objectives.
We also talked of the Mediterranean Union project. I mentioned my interest in the project, given the role that Monaco can play in fostering a rapprochement and solidarity between European countries and countries on the southern shores of the Mediterranean. Furthermore, we agreed to promote initiatives in the fields of cooperation and relief. I concluded by ensuring Mrs Merkel of the Principality of Monaco's support of Germany fully embracing its role in the UN, notably within the Security Council.
The friendly ties between our two countries have been strengthened, much to my delight and we expressed the wish to deepen further still our dialogue on the economy, tourism and culture."
