Organised at the initiative of Jacques Chirac, the President of France, the conference aimed, on the one hand, "jointly to acknowledge the state of the environment and the worrying worsening of the ecological situation, and on the other, to put forward a series of internationally agreed proposals for priority action."
H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco spoke at the workshop entitled "Inventing Ecological Growth: changing mentalities and patterns of production and consumption." The workshop was co-chaired by Messrs Hubert Védrine and Jeremy Rifkin.
