2nd Edition of the Monte-Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean

On Wednesday 26 September, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, accompanied by H.S.H. Princess Charlene of Monaco, chaired the second Monte-Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean, in the presence of many international artists and philanthropists mobilised to help protect the ocean. Under the hammer of Simon de Pury, an exceptional auction punctuated a prestigious evening on the theme "Twenty Thousand Miles Under the Sea." A great success for this fund-raising evening to support marine conservation activities carried out by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

In His speech, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco recalled the threats to the marine environment, "Today, the oceans, these bodies of water which make up more than 1 billion cubic kilometres are vulnerable. Today, these expanses, covering more than two-thirds of the Planet are threatened as they have never been in history. Today, the oceans need us (…) They need us to protect them. They need us to develop a new relationship with them: more attentive, more responsible, more sustainable. That is what My Foundation has been striving to do, for 12 years now."

At this Gala, Orlando Bloom was honoured with the "Special Award of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation" in recognition of his efforts to raise public awareness about environmental protection issues.
Accepting the award from the hands of the Sovereign Prince, the actor declared: "The urgency of climate change has never been as strong as today. The science is clear. What will they say about us in a hundred years? That we knew and did nothing? The world changes and with it we need to change our habits. So, I challenge you to think about the impact you have, as well as the legacy you will leave your children and grandchildren, because I honestly think that each individual is capable of creating real and major change."

Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Gloria Gaynor, Robert Davi, Madcon and the famous mentalist, Lior Suchard, also captivated the guests. The organic gastronomic menu conceived by Michelin-starred chef Paolo Sari perfectly reflected the philosophy of the Monte-Carlo Gala for sustainable management of marine and land resources.

The funds collected will be used to fund the priority marine conservation programmes of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation: plastic pollution, scientific studies about acidification, protection of coral, protected marine areas, endangered species and innovative technologies. Thanks to the previous edition, 37 international projects and 2 initiatives have been supported. Playing a key role in regulating the climate, the ocean covers more than 70% of the surface of the planet, produces 50% of the oxygen we breathe and absorbs 25% of carbon dioxide emissions. Overfishing, illegal fishing, rising temperatures and multiple pollutions dangerously threaten its balance.

The Monte-Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean is organised by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and Milutin Gatsby, Global Fundraising Chairman, with the support of the Monaco Yacht Show, the Oceanographic Institute - Prince Albert I Foundation, the Yacht Club of Monaco, the Société des Bains de Mer and Monaco Private Label.
