National Holiday 2020

On Thursday 19 November 2020 the Monegasque National Day celebrations took place.

This year H.S.H. Prince Albert II wanted to modify the programme of festivities in order to comply with the health rules imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The traditional award ceremonies have been conducted outdoors since 16 November. The wearing of masks and the following of physical distancing rules were scrupulously respected.

The Sovereign Prince wanted the entities and individuals who have been particularly involved in the fight against Covid-19 to be honoured.

Therefore a "Covid-19 award" has been created this year: decorations in the Order of Grimaldi and Medals of Honour. The Monegasque Red Cross and the Princess Grace Hospital Centre (CHPG) each received the decoration in the Order of Grimaldi: the CHPG on Monday 16 November and the Monegasque Red Cross on Thursday 19 November during the presentation of arms in the Cour d'Honneur.

Parcel deliveries to Monegasque seniors by H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie and to beneficiaries of the Monegasque Red Cross by T.SH. Prince Albert and Princess Charlene have been replaced by deliveries direct to the beneficiaries.

On Thursday 19 November, after the solemn thanksgiving Mass in Monaco Cathedral, only the military ceremony in the Cour d'Honneur was maintained in the presence of Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, Their Children, Crown Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, members of His family, the Sovereign House, the Prince’s Government and representatives of Monegasque Institutions.

The ceremony began with a presentation of arms, followed by the awarding of ranks to the military personnel, a distinction of the Order of Saint Charles to a member of the Law Enforcement Authority and medals to the staff of the Prince’s Palace by the Sovereign Prince.

A 15 stage display to pay tribute to the 15 years of H.S.H. Prince Albert II’s reign was created by all the soldiers.

The ceremonies in the Cour d'Honneur of the Prince's Palace were accompanied by the Prince's Guards ("Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince") Orchestra and three members of the Law Enforcement Authority donned Papal uniforms to pay tribute to the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Prince's "Company of Guards" (the Corps that preceded the current "Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince").

The day of 19 November concluded with the concert 'Farinelli and his time' by Cécilia Bartoli, accompanied by the Prince's Musicians at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
