United Nations Ocean Conference

Opening of UNOC3 in Nice

The UN conference on the oceans opened on Monday, June 9, in Nice. More than 60 world leaders spoke during the General Debate this morning in the plenary hall.
In his address, H.S.H. Prince Albert II agreed at the opening: "Through the Pact for the Future, adopted last September, we have committed ourselves to taking ambitious measures for the oceans. The mobilization of the scientific community, through the Decade of Ocean Science, must be an opportunity to reaffirm the role of science in our approach to the ocean. The Principality of Monaco supports the creation of an International Platform for Ocean Sustainability, within the framework of UNESCO's Oceanographic Commission. Finally, our action in favor of achieving SDG 14 must be accompanied by the deployment of an appropriate economic model that is compatible with respectful management of the ocean.
We must promote and finance this economic model through the joint commitment of public and private actors. Maritime transport, fishing, aquaculture, and renewable energies: all sectors are concerned and can now rely on innovative technologies. By organizing the BEFF yesterday and the day before, the Principality of Monaco mobilized political decision-makers, scientists, NGOs, economic circles, and private and public financial institutions in this direction.
After speaking at the Cryosphere Pavilion, located at La Baleine in the Palais des Expositions, Prince Albert II strolled through the Pavilion to talk and share ideas with the public and participants at this major global event.
