The 44th Monte Carlo International Circus Festival

The 44th Monte Carlo International Circus Festival took place under the Fontvieille big top from 16 – 26 January. Organised and presided over by H.S.H. Princess Stephanie, this year the Festival showcased horses thanks to the “Grand Cavalry” of the Knie Swiss National Circus which was celebrating its centenary.

Since its creation by Prince Rainier III in 1974, the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival has become one of the most prestigious global events in the arts of the circus.

This year more than 150 artists, from 18 different countries, took part in the competition on the famous Monegasque “ring of light”.

Three Golden Clowns, four Silver Clowns and four Bronze Clowns were awarded by members of the Prince’s family to the best acts of this 44th edition. A Golden Clown was awarded to the younger generation of the Knie family, Ivan Frederick Knie, Maicol and Wioris Errani, for their incredible performance in the ring and their work with the horses. Other winners were acrobats, the Martinez Brothers and trapeze artists Tuniziani who were also awarded a Golden Clown.
