H.R.H. The Princess of Hanover participated in the 3rd International Day to Protect Education from Attack

At the invitation of H.H. Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser of Qatar - UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education, H.R.H. The Princess of Hanover, in Her capacity as Goodwill Ambassador for Girls' and Women's Education, participated in the 3rd International Day to Protect Education from Attack, which took place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on Friday, 9 September 2022. This day aims to affirm the importance of acting to protect the right to education in the face of conflict, violence and devastation.

In 2020 and 2021, attacks on schools increased by more than a third compared to 2019. This situation is further exacerbated by new conflicts and makes it all the more crucial for everyone to engage on these issues.

A high-level panel was therefore convened to discuss the issue of education under ever increasing threat. The panel included the following participants:

- H.R.H. Maria Teresa, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg

- Ms Catherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF

- Ms. Stefania Giannini, UNESCO, Deputy Director for Education; Ms. Yalda Hakim, UNESCO, Deputy Director for Education

- Ms Yalda Hakim, Journalist;

- Ms Rosario Diaz Garavito, Youth Advisory Board member and CEO of The Millennials Movement.

During the Panel’s closing remarks, Ms Virginia Gamba, Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict of the UN Secretary General, underlined the in-depth work carried out by AMADE for the defence of children's rights, and praised in particular its "civil status for all" programme. The implementation of this programme by AMADE aims at registering the identity of a child with its Authorities, in order to allow him/her to be recognised as a subject in his/her own right, to benefit from a legal personality and to guarantee the protection of his/her civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.

After having spoken about the commitments of each of them in education, both with regard to Her Royal Highness Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg and the former Lebanese Minister of Education, Mrs. Bahia Hariri, who are both also UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors, H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover also met in the morning with the Director-General of UNESCO, Mrs Audrey Azoulay, the President of Ghana, H.E. Mr Nana-Akufo-Addo, and the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Children in Armed Conflict, Mrs Virginia Gamba. She also met with H.H. Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser.
